Student Portfolios and Accessing Student Work

At any time during the school year, Burlington students have the ability to add samples of their student work to their electronic portfolios.  Especially now at the end of the year, students and teachers are reflecting back on projects, student growth and progress, accomplishments, and achievements.  Often such milestones of learning become an entry or post to a student's electronic portfolio.

It has been my pleasure to co-teach this past week along side Miss Courtney Fallon, Pine Glen Art teacher.  Together, we have met with all of our students in grades 1 through 5 and helped them post pictures of their artwork to their student portfolios.  Here are some photos of us in class during this process.  After the photos, I have created a handout explaining the steps to access a student portfolio, via Blogger, a Google app, as well as student work saved in their Google Drive, another Google app.  Please know that grade K teachers have also created posts or entries to their students' electronic portfolios as well and can be accessed following the same handout.  Enjoy.

Grade 5 Book Trailers

For our final project this year, fifth graders are making book trailers for books they have read and enjoyed. Like a movie trailer, the goal of a book trailer is to create interest in a book so that other students will want to read it. The students enjoyed creating and filming their work. Mrs. Ardizzoni and Miss Carney are going to create QR codes for each trailer so that PG students can watch them in the future and get ideas and inspiration for new books to try.

Pine Glen Summer Reading Check Out

Dear Parents,

Students will be allowed to check out books from the Pine Glen Library to read over the summer. Students in K may check out up to two books from the library, and students in Grades 1-5 may check out up to five books. Any grade five students who check out books from the PG Library are asked to return their books to the MSMS Learning Commons in the fall.

Before students may check out their summer books, we need to make sure their library accounts are clear of any overdue and lost materials at their last library visits this week. If you have any questions or need a list of the materials your child has checked out, please contact Miss Carney at mcarney@bpsk12.org or (781) 221-7798.

There is no obligation for any student to check out books from our library to take home for the summer, but we hope to encourage reading over our break. We also strongly encourage families to visit the Burlington Public Library and enjoy their summer reading programs.

Summer Reading Visit

Summer reading is upon us! We had a great visit from Amanda, the children's librarian at the Burlington Public Library. She told students about all the great programs going on at the BPL this summer and how they can earn prizes just by reading!

It was a great morning. Students will be receiving fliers with a calendar of events and more information about the summer reading program. We hope everyone will take some time this summer to participate in the summer reading program at the Burlington Public Library. If you have any questions, please call Amanda- she will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Unique Game Show

We had a really fun morning with Unique Game Show! Students teamed up to answer trivia questions about many different topics and did a fantastic job. We also got to show off our dance moves and our amazing singing voices with a sing along!

Kindergarten Spring Poetry

Our kindergarten students have been discovering their five senses through stories, discussions, writing, and illustrating.  Our project began with reading the story My Five Senses by Aliki with our librarian, Miss Carney.

After reading the story, Miss Carney and Mrs. Ardizzoni helped students brainstorm and discuss their ideas of things they could see, hear, taste, touch, and smell during the season of spring.

During the next meeting, students wrote one sentence for each of the senses, beginning with the phrase, "In the spring, I" see / hear / taste / touch / smell ________________________________.

Then students used the app, Drawing Pad on their classroom iPads, to illustrate one of the sense sentences they had written.  After illustrating, Miss Carney and Mrs. Ardizzoni helped students type the sentence on their drawings and students then concluded by "autographing" their artwork.

Next, Mrs. Ardizzoni used the app, Book Creator to compile all of the students' illustrations and writing into one classroom poetry book.  Here we are, at the conclusion of the project where students got to see their final product as both an ebook and hardcopy classroom book.  Students were called up to the board when their page was displayed and they read their sentence aloud.  Congratulations kindergartners on being authors, illustrators, presenters, and increasing your digital literacy skills!

Spring Birthday Book Club!

Spring Birthday Book Club is here!

If you would like to contribute to the Birthday Book Club, a donation amount of $15.00 is greatly appreciated. Please complete and return the application below to the library along with your check payable to Pine Glen LTC. Your child will be invited to the library to select a book from the new acquisitions. A special bookplate with your child’s name and your name(s) as the donor will be placed inside the front cover. Your child’s photo with the birthday book will be added to the Birthday Book Club Wall outside the library and on the Pine Glen Library & Technology Center website (unless Pine Glen has on record that you do not wish for us to publicly use your child’s image.)

Please return your completed Birthday Book Club form and payment to the library by June 1st. Thank you as always for your support of the Pine Glen LTC!

Book Fair

Thanks to everyone who helped make our Spring Scholastic Book Fair such a success! If you'd still like to order online, the sale continues until tomorrow, Tuesday, 5/24. All orders will be delivered to Pine Glen and distributed to students by Miss Carney.

Sixth Grade Summer Reading

As we get ready for summer reading, here is a link to the summer reading choices for incoming sixth graders at MSMS. Students will read and take notes on their book choice- you only have to choose one! There will be an open-note multiple choice quiz in the Fall, so take your time, read carefully, take good notes, and most importantly, enjoy your book!

Enhancing Student Learning With Technology

Pine Glen's annual Arts & Technology night is an eventful evening showcasing our students' many talents.  On behalf of our librarian Miss Carney, and myself, Mrs. Ardizzoni, we would like to share our Google Slides presentation highlighting our students learning using technology, digital citizenship, STEM skills, and digital literacy skills across all of our elementary grade levels.  Feel free to pause any slide in order to scan a qr code to access student work or to click the play button to watch a video.  Take a peek at what our students have accomplished!  As their teachers we are very proud of them!

Pine Glen Arts & Technology / Spring Concert / Book Fair Night - Wednesday, May 18th, 6pm-8pm

Please join us for Pine Glen's annual Arts & Technology / Spring Concert / Book Fair Night coming up this Wednesday, May 18th.  Doors will open at 6pm allowing our guests time to admire students' art (Gr1-5) and technology projects (GrK-5) and visit the book fair in the library before settling in for an "On Broadway" musical performance by our Gr4-5 students in the cafeteria at 7pm.  It's sure to be a wonderful family night for all!  We hope to see you there!

The Spring Book Fair Has Arrived!

The Spring Scholastic book fair has arrived. It will run from Monday, May 16th- Friday, May 20th in the library. Students will be browsing and shopping throughout the week, and we will be open during Arts and Technology Night on Wednesday, May 18th from 6:00-7:30pm. You can also shop or compile a wish list online! See the attached flier for information. Any online orders will be delivered to the Pine Glen Library and distributed to students by Miss Carney and the library staff. Please remember to add 6.25% Massachusetts sales tax to your total! As always, there is no obligation to purchase materials from the book fair. Proceeds from the book fair are used to purchase materials for our library. Thanks in advance for your help in making our book fair a success and for your support of the Pine Glen Library. We look forward to seeing you next week!

Rob Buyea is Coming to Pine Glen!

We are so excited to welcome Rob Buyea- author or the Mr. Terupt series- to Pine Glen on June 16th at 9:30am! Rob will be speaking to our fourth and fifth grade classes about his work and his writing process. All three books in the Terupt series are available for pre-sale- take advantage of the 40% discount! Join Student Council Friday, April 15th to support Mrs. Visocchi’s RUN for Mass General Hospital’s FIGHTING against childhood cancer in the Boston Marathon!

Wear blue and yellow or running clothes to show your support! Student Council is asking for a $1 donation to go to Mass General!

Also be sure to congratulate Mrs. Visocchi for running in the Boston Marathon! We hope you participate in our school wide fundraiser!

A Skype Call with Author Lauren Tarshis

We were so excited to have a Skype call with author Lauren Tarshis! The author of the "I Survived" series talked to our third, fourth, and fifth graders about her writing process; how she decides which historic events she chooses to write about; and what authors inspire her. She was so kind, the students asked great questions, and we had a great discussion! The next installment in the I Survived series will focus on the eruption of Mt. St. Helens and will feature a girl on the cover for the first time in the series.

Google Expeditions Pioneer Program

Today, Miss Carney and Mrs. Ardizzoni were at the Memorial Elementary School to learn about the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program.  This program allows teachers to take students on a virtual reality expedition to a variety of locations.  It was exciting to participate in and see students interacting with their Google Cardboard, virtual reality environment, and one another.  Thank you too Mr. Musselman for teaching us more about recycling during our lesson!
